Hanna's 2026 varsity football season opener is August 21 at Belton-Honea Path. That's the date we've been building toward. Show up online that Friday night and you'll be able to follow every play, every carry, every completion as it happens, from wherever you happen to be.
That's the short version of what this site is.
The longer version starts with a spreadsheet and a man who had no intention of using it.
For 13 years I've run a site covering BHP football. It started because my dad has spent more than two decades as the Bears' statistician, doing it the old way, by hand, on paper, in the dark, in the rain, from August through October (and sometimes November). He asked whether I could build him something to make capturing the stats easier. I spent a couple weeks building an Excel system, walked him through the whole thing, handed it over, and he told me he did not know how to use Excel.
He was not apologetic about this. He mentioned it the way a man mentions the weather.
So I started spending Friday nights next to him instead. That was supposed to be temporary. One volunteer year turned into a decade of them, and what began as a spreadsheet grew into a website, weekly graphics, social media accounts, a podcast and a Friday-night routine my family stopped questioning years ago.
Then Kevin Selman got involved.
Kevin does play-by-play analysis for the 94.9 WAHM broadcast, along with a myriad of other things sports related, and he's been asking me for a few years to bring live stats to the Hanna crew. I gave him reasonable answers, shrugging off the ask. I already have a Friday night obligation. I have a system that works. I have a dad who still needs someone next to him at the BHP press box, on account of the "Excel" situation.
Kevin's counter-move was to go around me entirely and talk to my wife.
She was on board immediately. Not "let me think about it" on board. Not "if that's what you want" on board. She had already decided this was a good idea and was mostly waiting for me to catch up, which took considerably longer than it should have. Somewhere in there I ran out of reasons, and realized what my wife already knew.
The reason that actually moved me, and it isn't Kevin's persistence or my wife's better judgment.
This is my community. My boys are in the Hanna pipeline. They already want to be at the games on Friday nights, and they ask about the Yellow Jackets in the specific way kids do when something has gotten into them. They make plans with their friends at school on Friday to meet up at the game. And maybe one of them ends up on that field someday. Maybe none of them do. Either way, this is where they're growing up, and high school football at its core is a community thing. The stadium fills up with people who live within a few miles of each other and care about the same team wearing their colors. I wanted to support that in the one way I actually know how.

What we're actually doing
Live stats, play by play
This season, and hopefully going forward, we'll be running a live feed through ExceedingStats.com during games. Team totals, individual lines, drive-by-drive detail, all of it updating as the game happens. We'll post the link before kickoff on X, Facebook and here on the site.
What that means in practice: you open the link on your phone and you're looking at the game. Not a score. Not a final that shows up Saturday morning. The actual game, play by play, while it's still being played.
If you're stuck at work, that link is for you. If you're out of town, or across the county at a younger kid's game, or sitting in the stands trying to follow the relentless yardages gained by the Jacket backfield, that link is for you too. Grandparents who can't make the drive anymore. Alumni who moved off and still check the score every Friday in the fall. The guy at the deer camp with one bar of service. You're all covered.
Live stat-keeping is not a perfect science, and I'd rather say that now than pretend otherwise later. A play gets ruled differently than it first looked. A yard line gets adjusted. We'll fix what needs fixing and the postgame numbers are the ones that go in the permanent record.
A record that stays put
After the final whistle, those numbers move from the live feed into HannaFootball.com. Past game scores are already loaded. Records go in shortly. And throughout the season we'll be working backward, attaching box score statistics to games played before 2026. That last piece deserves a minute. Hanna football has decades of history, and a real chunk of it lives in filing cabinets, shoeboxes, old programs, and the memory of people who were in the stands. Numbers disappear quietly. A great season becomes "they were good that year." A remarkable individual performance becomes a story someone half-remembers at a reunion, and the details get better every time it's told.
We won't get all of it. We'll get more of it than currently exists in one place, which is the realistic version of the goal. The point is that ten years from now, somebody should be able to look up what a player did on a Friday night in 2026 and find an actual answer instead of a memory at a reunion.
Written coverage
Game previews before, recaps after, and the occasional editorial when something's genuinely worth acknowledging.
A box score is a great witness and a terrible explainer. It'll tell you a team ran 38 times for 210 yards. It will never tell you why they came out of halftime looking like a completely different program, or which adjustment turned a game, or why a certain matchup was always going to decide the night. That's the gap the written stuff is meant to fill.
Previews will look at what the numbers say about the matchup ahead. Recaps will try to explain the game rather than re-narrate it, because you already watched it or you already read the play-by-play. Editorials will show up when there's a real point to make, not to fill a slot on a schedule.
Some weeks the analysis will be sharp because the data supports it. Some weeks it'll be shorter because it doesn't. We'd rather be right and brief than long and confident.

Who this is for
Every player who's worn a Hanna jersey. Every coach who put in hours nobody saw. Coach Tone and his current staff. The current players, the ones before them, and the ones still coming.
Positive models are harder to find than they used to be. Hanna football turns them out at a rate that deserves more attention than it gets. A kid who shows up for summer workouts in July, when nobody's watching and nothing's at stake, has done something worth recording. So has the assistant coach who drives the bus or washes the uniforms. So has the senior who spent four years on scout team, never got a meaningful snap, and never missed a practice either.
Statistics won't capture most of that. That's part of why the written coverage exists. We'll count what can be counted and write about the rest. Because the rest means so much more to a program like Hanna than any counted number.
What this is not
Plenty of people already cover this program, and they cover it well. The WAHM broadcast crew. Photographers and Videographers who capture those special game moments. Parents who film every snap from the top row and share it with anyone who asks. Boosters who've been doing the unglamorous work for years. The people running the concession stand who somehow know every player's name, jersey number, and what position his older brother played.
None of that needed fixing. Nobody looked at Hanna football and thought the support was thin.
I want to be direct about this because launch posts like this one have a habit of sounding otherwise. There's a version of a new site that shows up acting like it arrived to solve a problem, and that version tends to step on people who've been doing the work without being asked to. This isn't that. We're not competing with anyone, replacing anyone, or positioning ourselves as the authoritative anything. If you already get your Hanna football from somewhere else, keep getting it there. Get it from us too if you want, or don't.
What we're offering is narrow on purpose. Numbers, mostly. Live during the game, permanent afterward, going back as far as we can dig. That's a specific job, and it's the one I know how to do. It doesn't replace watching the game, listening to Kevin call it, or standing on the fence line at a home game. It sits alongside all of that.
A few other things this isn't.
It isn't a scouting service. We're not ranking teenagers, projecting college futures, or telling anybody what a kid's ceiling looks like. That's not our business and it's not fair to the kids.
It isn't a place to criticize players by name. When something on the field doesn't work, we'll talk about the unit, the situation, or the plan. High school kids get to make mistakes without a website attaching their name to it in perpetuity.
It isn't official. We're not affiliated with the school, the athletic department, or the program. Nothing here should be read as a statement from T.L. Hanna or Anderson District 5. When we get something wrong, that's on us.
And it is in no way about me. I mentioned my name once, up top, and that was mostly so you'd know there is a real person behind this. The whole point is the names on the roster and the ones on the coaching staff are the ones that will get the spotlight.
Hanna football already has a lot of people shining lights on it. We're adding one more, pointed at the same field.
